What to know before getting started
If you want the most out of this timer there are a few thing you can do:
- Turn of your phone, put it in airplane mode or shut off notifications and volume if you use the tools on your phone.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications.
- Wear noise-cancelling headphones if you’re working in a noisy environment.
- Prepare a glass of water and everything you’ll need before you begin.
- Decide on one clear task to complete during your focus session.
How to Use the Deep Work Session Timer
Step 1
Select how many minutes you want to work by entering your preferred time under Work Duration. We recommend choosing between 25 and 50 minutes, depending on the type of task you’re working on and how much time you have.
Step 2
Choose how long you want your short break to be. Even a few minutes break can help reduce mental fatigue and improve your concentration before the next session begins.
Step 3 choose your long breaks
Decide how long your long break should be. We recommend taking at least 15 minutes after completing several focus sessions.
Personally, I like taking a 30-minute break to grab a drink, stretch my legs, and go for a short walk outside. It helps me return to work feeling refreshed.
Finally, choose how many work sessions you want to complete before your long break starts.
Step 4 Start session
Click the green Start Session button to begin. If you need to pause your session, you can use the pause button. Want to start over? Press the Reset button to clear your current session and begin again.
Built-In Features
The timer includes several useful features to help you stay on track throughout the day.
It automatically displays:
- The remaining time in your current session.
- Your current work session (for example, Session 2 of 4).
- Your total focus time for the day.
- The number of completed sessions.
- When it’s time to take a short or long break.
Although it’s a simple tool, following a structured work-and-break routine can make it much easier to stay focused during long study or work sessions.
